Democracy Alerts

From time to time, the World Movement for Democracy issues alerts concerning participants and other colleagues who are, or may be, facing personal danger due to their work on behalf of democracy and for whom a vigorous response from around the world may be critical.

The World Movement has learned from Steering Committee member (Brazil) Jacqueline Pitanguy, that on August 4, the National Council for Women’s Rights of Brazil, of which Ms. Pitanguy is a member, issued a letter to Mr. Mohsen Shaterzadeh, Ambassador of Iran to Brazil, opposing the planned execution of Ms. Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani.  Ms. Ashtiani, a 43 year-old mother of two, is being detained by Iranian authorities despite recently being offered asylum by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Previously punished with flogging for having an “...

According to the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), on July 6, two unidentified men on motorcycles threw Molotov cocktails the Tempo office in South Jakarta. The attack follows a recent Tempo story on alleged suspicious bank accounts held by several high-ranking police officers. IFJ condemns the attack and is calling for a full and transparent investigation into the crime. The Tempo was a local partner for the World Movement’s Sixth Assembly in Jakarta last April.

According to IFEX, on August 13, Abdeljalil Al-Singace, head of the Shiite opposition group Haq (Movement for Liberties and Democracy) in Bahrain, was arrested at the airport in Muarraq upon returning from a conference on human rights conditions in Bahrain and speaking at London's House of Lords on rights violations and environmental degradation. Charges against him include defaming the government and judicial authorities and "publishing false information about the country's internal affairs" with the intent of tarnishing the perception of Bahrain.
