According to World Movement participating organization, the African Center for Justice and Peace Studies (ACJPS) of Sudan, the “Youth of 30 January for Change Alliance” organized demonstrations on January 30-31 in several cities in northern Sudan calling for the resignation of President Omar al-Bashir. Thousands of protestors were met by hundreds of riot police resulting in 113 arrests. Mohamed Abdelrahman, a student at Omdurman Islamic University, was shot and killed. ACJPS states that the demonstrations were influenced by recent events in Tunisia and Egypt. Organizers of the protest used Facebook invitations with the slogan “If the Egyptians and Tunisians can break the fear barrier, so can we.” Another demonstration is now being planned for February 3.
