Printer-friendly version
The World Movement for Democracy expresses its deep concern for the well-being of Mr. Abdulhadi Alkhawaja, former President of the Bahrain Centre for Human Rights, who was recently sentenced, along with 7 other activists, to life in prison for his involvement in the ongoing protests in Bahrain that began on February 14, 2011. Another eight activists received 15-year sentences.
According to the Bahrain Youth Society for Human Rights, Alkhawaja shouted “We shall continue on the path of peaceful resistance!” after his sentencing at the trial, which was conducted as a military tribunal even though Alkhawaja and the others are civilians. According to his daughter, security forces violently pushed Alkhawaja out of the courtroom, where, she reported he was severely beaten. The attack added to the medical conditions he incurred from earlier beatings while in detention.
Alkhawaja released the following letter requesting that his family be given access to his prison medical files to help him find medical care: http://byshr.org/wp-content/Alkhawjas-letter-regarding-his-health-situationEN.pdf.
