[January 25, 2010]Dr. Chee Soon Juan Arrested Again
Dr. Chee Soon Juan, Chairman of the Alliance for Reform and Democracy in Asia and President of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), has been imprisoned yet again, this time for one week along with his SDP colleague Mr. Ghandi Ambalam. On January 19 he was convicted of distributing leaflets containing criticisms of government policy. A third SDP leader, Ms. Chee Siok Chin, has already served a week-long sentence for the same charges earlier this month. All three have appealed their convictions, arguing that according to the Singapore Constitution it is not a criminal offense to oppose the government. Dr. Chee’s current imprisonment is his eighth jail term, all of which occurred after attempting to exercise the right to freedom of expression.
