Iranian Students Arrest and Accused of Acting Against National Security

Printer-friendly version

Three Iranians, Ali Afshari (student leader), Mehrangiz Kar (lawyer), and Shahla Lahiji (publisher), have been held in detention, accused of acting against national security. On May 16, Afshari appeared on Iranian state television and supposedly "confessed" to a plot to overthrow the Islamic Republic of Iran. Amnesty International is concerned that the televised "confession" of Afshari already suggests that the Government has determined his "guilt" before any trail is held.
