[October 13, 2009]Judge in Singapore Convicts Democratic Party Leader Secretary General Chee Soon Juan
On September 4, a district judge in Singapore convicted the Secretary General of the Singapore Democratic Party and World Movement participant, Dr. Chee Soon Juan, on two counts of speaking in public without a permit. Dr. Chee is to be fined $10,000 or face 10 weeks imprisonment pending an appeal. He has argued that since the Constitution protects freedom of assembly, the government’s blanket ban on all outdoor political events is legally invalid and unconstitutional. Including this recent verdict, he has now been convicted of four counts of speaking without a permit and is awaiting a decision on four more.
