[March 11, 2011]Threats Targeting Opposition Activists in Bahrain
Printer-friendly version
Protests in Bahrain have continued since February 14, 2011, the 10th anniversary of a referendum in favor of the National Action Charter of Bahrain, which returned the country to constitutional rule. Sources on the ground report that on Friday, March 11, there will be a march to the Court of the King of Bahrain to push for the dissolution of the Monarchy. Given the recent increase in number of deployed security forces, there is a growing fear that the march will elicit more attacks against the opposition.
The World Movement for Democracy is especially concerned over individual targeting of opposition leaders. Recent threats have been made against Mohammed Al-Maskati and Naji Fateel of the Bahrain Youth Society for Human Rights, and Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja of Human Rights Defenders. Anonymous groups published their names, phone numbers, and home addresses, along with photos, and are calling for government supporters to kill these activists on grounds of treason. According to Mr. Al-Maskati, since the publication of his name and phone number, he has been receiving threatening messages from anonymous phone calls.
Please call or fax the government of Bahrain to demand that they abide by universal standards of freedom of assembly and expression by allowing demonstrators to call peacefully for democratic reforms and end the harassment and threats against opposition activists.
