Young Demonstrators Tortured in Northern Sudan

Printer-friendly version
According to the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and the African Centre for Justice and Peace Studies (ACJPS), the National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) of Sudan has tortured a number of young activists of the “Youth of 30 January for Change Alliance.” Through Facebook and Twitter, the activists began a series of demonstrations on January 30 calling for the resignation of President Omar al-Bashir. During the first days of the demonstrations, over 100 activists were arrested and a large number still remain in detention. ACJPS has received reports that the NISS is using electric shocks and sleep deprivation to torture the detainees to instill fear and obtain information. ACJPS believes that the NISS is using detainees’ Facebook and Twitter information to stage false demonstrations to entrap and arrest more activists.

FIDH and ACJPS strongly condemn the ongoing repression by Sudanese authorities against peaceful demonstrators who call for democracy and respect for human rights in the country. They call on the government of Sudan:

  • To fully respect freedom of expression and association protected by Article 39 of the Interim Constitution and Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights ratified by Sudan;
  • To stop any excessive use of force by police and NISS agents against demonstrators;
  • To immediately release all detainees arrested in association with demonstrations;
  • To take all necessary measures to put an end to acts of torture and to open independent investigations to bring perpetrators of such acts before justice; and
  • To protect the rights of human rights defenders, in conformity with the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders adopted in 1998.
