~ Fourth Assembly ~
Istanbul, Turkey
April 2-5, 2006
Advancing Democracy: Justice, Pluralism, and Participation
Venue: Lütfi Kirdar Convention & Exhibition Centre, Istanbul, Turkey
Objective: The Fourth Assembly brought together a richly diverse group of participants representing every region of the world in the spirit of shared democratic values. They taught and learned from each other, build collaborative relationships, and thereby strengthen the World Movement as a network committed to mutual support, exchange, and cooperation.
Participants: Nearly 600 democracy activists, practitioners, trade unionists, scholars, policy makers, and others engaged in promoting democracy around the world. Please note that participation is by invitation only.
Agenda: To help ensure that it would be as focused as possible on the practical ways that democrats could advance their work and mutually support each other, the Fourth Assembly mainly was composed of discussion workshops to maximize opportunities for participation and exchange. There were no declarations or policy resolutions issued by the Assembly. A “Democracy Fair” will feature an exhibition area, a technology training center, a video screening room, and a “town hall” (in which participants could educate each other about their respective causes and generate support for them).
