Networks The following is a list of human rights networks with global and regional foci. This list is not intended to be a comprehensive compilation of networks. International: Forefront is a global network of young human rights activists committed to promoting sustainable social change by providing protection and support to activists defending human rights in their communities. It facilitates the exchange of information, skills, and technology, and provides technical assistance to young activists. Human Rights Watch is dedicated to protecting the human rights of people around the world. HRW conducts extensive research and documents human rights violations in variety of human rights fields and around the globe. It also campaigns on behalf of individuals whose rights are violated, and on particular issues. The HRW Web site contains numerous reports, news, alerts, and other information. International Council of Voluntary Agencies (ICVA) is a global network that brings together humanitarian and human rights NGOs as an advocacy alliance for humanitarian action. Focusing on humanitarian and refugee policy issues, ICVA draws upon the work of its members at the field level and brings their experiences to international decision-making fora. International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) is a coalition of more than 116 organizations around the world that work for effective improvements in the protection of victims, the prevention of human rights abuses, and the prosecution of those responsible. International Rescue Committee (IRC) is a global network of first responders, humanitarian relief workers, healthcare providers, educators, community leaders, activists, and volunteers. IRC provides access to safety, sanctuary, and sustainable change for millions of people whose lives have been shattered by violence and oppression. IRC is a global leader in emergency relief, rehabilitation, protection of human rights, post-conflict development, resettlement services and advocacy for those uprooted or affected by violent conflict and oppression. Latin American and European Network on Human Rights (LAEHR) was set up in 2005 for cooperation between NGOs and Universities in Latin-America, Europe, and the United States in order to build up and to strengthen capacity in the field of human rights and to improve teaching and research capabilities so that a superior level of education in human rights can be reached. The network aims to reinforce cooperation in the field of higher education between the European Union and Latin America. New Tactics in Human Rights project, led by a diverse group of international organizations and practitioners, promotes tactical innovation and strategic thinking within the international human rights community as an effective means for the human rights movement to expand options and possibilities. Africa: African Network for Prevention and Protection Against Child Abuse and Neglect (ANPPCAN) elevates the rights of children by enhancing, in partnership with others, the prevention and protection of children from all forms of maltreatment through information exchange, research and analysis, advocacy, policy recommendations for AU and national governments, assistance and advice for organizations working in the field of children's rights, and other efforts. www.anppcan.org Mano River Union Civil Society Movement unites more than 40 groups from Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea to mobilize and coordinate their efforts in promoting peace, democracy, and human rights in Africa and the Mano River Region. Contact: civilsociety2004@yahoo.com Union Interafricaine des Droits de l'Homme (UIDH) defends, promotes and protects human rights, democracy and development throughout Africa, and assures a diffusion of information to citizens through communication and organization. www.iuhr.org (in French) West Africa Human Rights Defenders Network strives to increase the mutual support among human rights and pro-democracy organizations in West Africa, the capacity of human rights organizations and their regional solidarity; and to develop regional solutions to human rights problems. The Network includes both Anglophone and Francophone groups. Contact: crs@yorku.ca Asia: Committee for Human Rights in North Korea (HRNK) is a distinguished network of foreign policy and human rights specialists who promote human rights in North Korea. HRNK's guiding objectives are to monitor relief efforts; monitor economic assistance efforts; free North Korea's borders; inform the North Korean citizens; open communications; allow NGOs entry; and development of good economic principles. Vietnam Human Rights Network promotes human rights, civil liberties and other basic freedoms set forth in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and subsequent international human rights instruments. The network utilizes modern communication facilities, such as the Internet, to achieve its mission and to improve communication and cooperation among the network members. AMERICAS Latin American and Caribbean Committee for the Defense of Women's Rights (CLADEM), is a women's and women's organizations network that in all Latin America and the Caribbean are committed to achieve an effective defense of women's rights. They form a network that articulates organizations and individuals committed in the defense and promotion of Women's Rights through different activities: formulating legislative proposals, researching, training, litigating, teaching at universities, informing, communicating and exercising solidarity actions. Latin American Federation of Associations for Relatives of the Detained-Disappeared (FEDEFAM) is a nongovernmental organization formed by associations of relatives of the disappeared in countries of Latin America and the Caribbean which have or are currently practicing forced disappearance. FEDEFAM is a non-profit humanitarian organization, independent of all political or religious doctrines and institutions. They have member associations with the following countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brasil, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, México, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Perú, Uruguay. They are located in Caracas, Venezuela and they receive funds from individuals. Montana Human Rights Network (MHRN) is a grassroots, membership-based organization of over 1,400 members. MHRN's mission is to promote democratic values such as pluralism, equality, and justice; challenge bigotry and intolerance; and organize communities to speak out in support of democratic principles and institutions. Central and Eastern Europe and Eurasia: Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights based in Warsaw, strives to develop human rights domestically and abroad. HFHR has engaged in numerous joint activities with international and domestic organizations. It maintains constant contact with the graduates of its School on Human Rights, over half of whom have cooperated with HFHR on various projects, human rights monitoring, and other activities. The organization also connects large groups of lawyers, human rights scholars, and volunteers. www.hfhrpol.waw.pl/en Human Rights Center "Viasna," based in Minsk with several branches throughout Belarus, defends victims of repression in court, offers legal advice and assistance to citizens, and monitors politically motivated trials and demonstrations. It also compiles information on human rights violations, organizes educational programs on human rights, disseminates reports on the country's human rights situation, and monitors elections. www.spring96.org/en International Helsinki Federation for Human Rights is a self-governing group of nongovernmental, not-for-profit organizations that act to protect human rights throughout Europe, North America, and Central Asia. A primary specific goal is to monitor compliance with the human rights provisions of the Helsinki Final Act and its Follow-up Documents. www.ihf-hr.org/index.php Jalal-Abad Regional Human Rights Organization "Spravedlivost" (Justice) Spravedlivost maintains a network of human rights NGOs in Jalal-Abad region of Kyrgyzstan and serves as a resource center and coordinator for the activities of groups within the region. Spravedlivost also provides free legal services for the poor, monitors the human rights situation in southern Kyrgyzstan, and trains lawyers and activists. www.justiceunion.org Interview with Valery Uleev, Executive Director, Spravedlivost Kyrgyz Committee for Human Rights (KCHR) KCHR is one of Kyrgyzstan's largest NGOs, uniting thousands of human rights activists both in Kyrgyzstan and abroad. KCHR is a member of IHF, FIDH, OMCT and number of other organizations. KCHR cooperates with more than 1,000 international NGOs, inter-governmental and governmental organizations abroad, many well-known universities and with independent NGOs in Kyrgyzstan. www.kchr.org/index.html Memorial is a movement that arose in the years of perestroika in the former Soviet Union. Its main task was the awakening and preservation of the societal memory of the severe political persecution in the Soviet Union. Today, it's a community of dozens of organizations in different regions of Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Latvia, and Georgia conducting extensive research and documentation of human rights violations in Central/Eastern Europe and Eurasia, defending human rights, and providing legal services to vulnerable populations. www.memo.ru Youth Human Rights Movement (YHRM) headquartered in Voronezh, Russia, is a network of young activists and youth organizations in Russia and Central/Eastern Europe and Eurasia working to shape a new generation of human rights leaders, to promote human rights and universal human values, and to develop effective methods for protection of rights and freedoms. www.yhrm.hrworld.ru/7_what/7_1_what.shtml Za Prava Cheloveka (ZPC) is an all-Russia public movement 'For Human Rights' that brings together human rights organizations and other civil society organizations and groups, including trade unions and individuals. The aim of the movement is to support the development of the rule of law and civil society in Russia. http://zaprava.ru/en Middle East and North Africa: Arab NGOs Network for Development (ANND) is an independent, democratic, and civic organization that aims at strengthening civil society and enhancing the values of democracy and respect of human rights and sustainable development. It runs programs of advocacy and lobbying on regional and national policy-making regarding three main areas; development, trade, and democracy, while being committed to the international conventions on human rights and freedom. Lebanese Council of Women (LCW) is an umbrella organization for some 170 organizations in Lebanon. LCW aims to provide direction and vision to the activities of its member organizations by coordinating their efforts and mobilizing their potential towards the common goal of serving women's rights. NGO Coordination Committee in Iraq (NCCI) is an autonomous body created by NGOs working in Iraq, with the aim to promote information sharing and coordination. The purpose of NCCI is to provide a forum for collective NGO activity to enhance the effectiveness of humanitarian action in Iraq at the national level. NCCI aims to advocate that human rights and international humanitarian law are respected and to ensure humanitarian needs are identified, well lobbied for, and met. Professional Networks for Human Rights: International Human Rights Network of Academies and Scholarly Societies assists scientists and scholars around the world who are subjected to severe repression solely for having nonviolently exercised their rights as promulgated by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It also promotes human rights consciousness-raising and institutional commitment to human rights work among counterpart academies and scholarly societies worldwide. www7.nationalacademies.org/humanrights/Network_Description.html Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) promotes health by protecting human rights. The network members are physicians, business people, dentists, social workers, nurses, lawyers, psychologists, homemakers, teachers, students, and those in many other walks of life. www.phrusa.org/index.html Scholars at Risk (SAR) is an international network of universities and colleges working to promote academic freedom and to defend the human rights of scholars worldwide. The Network arranges short-term academic positions for scholars of any discipline and from any country who suffer violence or other threats because of their work, prominence, or exercise of basic rights. Members participate in lectures, panels, conferences and other Network activities to promote academic freedom.
