International Movement of Parliamentarians for Democracy
-About Us-
Founded in February 2003 at a meeting in Washington, D.C. of twenty-four parliamentarians from fifteen countries, the IMPD:
- Defends parliamentarians who are denied their seats, face harassment, or are otherwise prohibited from fulfilling their elected duties;
- Challenges undemocratic practices, political oppression, the violation of human rights, and government corruption;
- Enhances the ability of the democratic opposition within parliaments to challenge government unaccountability and corruption; and
- Works with the public and parliaments to deepen democracy.
The IMPD currently boasts 227 members from 33 countries. The Movement is affiliated with the World Movement for Democracy
(www.wmd.org), a global network of democrats,
including activists, practitioners, academics, and policy makers who have come together to cooperate in
the promotion of democracy. The Washington, D.C. based National Endowment for Democracy (NED)
(www.ned.org), a grant making organization that provides
assistance for democracy promotion activities to grassroots organizations in non-democratic and transitional
countries, currently serves as the secretariat for the World Movement and the IMPD.
