    Cambodian MPs Stripped of Immunity
    (March 2005)

    Three leading opposition members of Cambodia's National Assembly were recently stripped of their parliamentary immunity. In a closed session on February 3, the National Assembly voted to lift the parliamentary immunity of opposition leader Sam Rainsy and legislators Cheam Channy and Chea Poch, members of the Sam Rainsy Party.     Egyptian MP Detained
    (February 2005)

    On January 29, 2005, Mr. Ayman Nour, leader of al-Ghad (Tomorrow Party) and member of the Egyptian Parliament, was detained for allegedly forging documents to obtain a license for his political party. He submitted for the recognition of his party last year. State security investigators allege he forged the majority of the documents he was required to present to a governmental committee. As a result, Mr. Nour was stripped of his parliamentary immunity and detained by police on leaving the parliament building.     MP's Office Attacked

    The office Emily Lau, a vocal, pro-democracy legislator in Hong Kong. was vandalized and attacked by arsonists. A poster in Lau's office was set on fire and the phrase "All Chinese traitors must die" was written on the wall. Lau said her office has been attacked and she has been threatened previously, but never this strongly. More...




    Opposition Leader Sentenced
    (May 2004)

    On April 12th, opposition Pakistani parliamentarian Makhdoom Javed Hashmi was sentenced to 23 years in jail on seven counts of sedition. Hashmi was arrested on October 29, 2003 following the distribution and reading of a letter titled "To the National Leadership" at a press conference. The letter, which Hashmi says he received from army personnel, criticized the army and President Musharraf's policies and called for the termination of military influence in political affairs.     Opposition Figures Killed in Cambodia
    (March 2004)

    In the past seven months, several supporters of two opposition parties have been killed in Cambodia. Beginning with the August 6, 2003 shooting of the daughter of a Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) activist, nine supporters of both the Sam Rainsy and National United Front for Neutral, Peaceful, Cooperative, and Independent Cambodia (Funcinpec) parties have been killed.     Mongolian MP Arrested
    (August 2003)

    In front of dozens of journalists and human rights activists, Mongolian parliamentarian Lamjav Gundalai was forcefully removed from an airplane at Ulaanbaatar airport and later arrested by members of a special police force on July 24, 2003. Mr. Gundalai, vice chair of the opposition Democratic Party of Mongolia, was leaving for Singapore to chair a session on democracy and human rights at the International Youth Conference for Democracy.
