It supports international human rights campaigns, especially in defense of elected Members of Parliament who are denied the right to take office or who are the victims of persecution, and challenge undemocratic practices.

    Cambodian MPs Stripped of Immunity (March 2005)

    Three leading opposition members of Cambodia's National Assembly were recently stripped of their parliamentary immunity. In a closed session on February 3, the National Assembly voted to lift the parliamentary immunity of opposition leader Sam Rainsy and legislators Cheam Channy and Chea Poch, members of the Sam Rainsy Party.     Egyptian MP Detained (February 2005)

    On January 29, 2005, Mr. Ayman Nour, leader of al-Ghad (Tomorrow Party) and member of the Egyptian Parliament, was detained for allegedly forging documents to obtain a license for his political party. He submitted for the recognition of his party last year. State security investigators allege he forged the majority of the documents he was required to present to a governmental committee. As a result, Mr. Nour was stripped of his parliamentary immunity and detained by police on leaving the parliament building. He appeared in court twice and said that his arrest would hinder the democratic process and reform in the country. more...
