  • Statement Calling for the Release of Aung San Suu Kyi and the Restoration of Democracy in Burma

    July 2003

The International Movement of Parliamentarians for Democracy, a coalition of international parliamentarians dedicated to the defense and promotion of democracy around the world, condemns the arrest and detention of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and scores of National League for Democracy (NLD) members.

In May 1990, the NLD won more than 60 percent of the popular vote and captured more than 80 percent of the contested seats in the Burmese Parliament, but have been denied the right to take their lawful positions by the Burmese military regime. Since 1990, the junta has continued to detain, harass, and imprison NLD members, including Aung San Suu Kyi. The May 30, 2003 attack on Suu Kyi, her supporters, and the NLD infrastructure in Burma is the latest manifestation of regime's efforts to suppress support for Suu Kyi's democracy movement and popular support for political change in Burma.

The IMPD calls on the Burmese military regime to immediately release Aung San Suu Kyi and all other political prisoners in Burma; to account for those still missing from the May 30 attack; to respect fundamental human rights; and to promptly restore democracy in Burma.
