Twelve Arab organizations, representing nine Arab countries, participate in the Network, in addition to some independent public figures concerned with the cause of democratic development and support for human rights in Arab countries. The network publishes a quarterly newsletter and conducts training sessions on capacity building for Network members. AOHR operates its field missions in an effort to release political prisoners, in some cases as an observer and in others as a member of the defence panel. In addition to legal assistance, in several cases AOHR provides financial assistance to families of victims. AOHR's members represent 31 Arab countries. Its aim is to assist NGOs in capacity building and to act as a structure for coordination and the exchange of experiences among associations. The GPFC also aims to improve journalists' skills in the Gulf region by bringing together journalists from the Gulf and Yemen who are increasingly concerned about the absence of press freedom in the region. The group will initially focus on conducting training programs for journalists, with a particular emphasis on "pushing the envelope" in reporting, and on identifying incidents or practices that curtail press freedom. With its Web site, HRMN seeeks to strengthen cooperation among human rights advocates throughout the region, moderate an open forum for debates and circulate reports from network members. The Web site is currently under construction and will be launched in 2002. It has since run more than 60 public campaigns in support of citizens and activists who have been harassed in countries such as Egypt, Syria, Libya, Tunisia, Mauritania, Bahrain, Yemen, Sudan and Algeria. It has a network of more than 100 human rights activists in the region. |
