Mission:
The Carnegie Moscow Center was founded in 1993 as the first public policy research institution of its kind and scope to study the core problems of Russian domestic and foreign policy. It seeks to promote intellectual collaboration between scholars and policy experts in Russia and between Russian and foreign experts; to provide independent analysis on a wide array of public policy issues; and to provide a respected and independent forum for discussion and debate on the most compelling issues facing Russia, Eurasia, and the international community. In addition to programs related to post-Soviet economic transition, foreign and security policy, nuclear proliferation, and ethnicity and nation-building, the Carnegie Moscow Center conducts research on Russian domestic politics and political institutions. In particular, the Center tracks day-to-day political developments in Russia and also examines the longer-term processes of change in political institutions, relations between the center and Russian regions, and the establishment of democratic values that are shaping the country’s political future.
Activities include:
- hosting seminars, conferences, and lectures featuring distinguished government officials, scholars, and opinion leaders from Russia, other post-Soviet states, the United States, and Europe, as well as occasional speakers from other parts of the world
- publishing monographs, edited volumes, reference works, periodicals, a Working Papers series and monthly Briefings. Since 1996, the Center has published the quarterly journal Pro et Contra. These publications—produced in Russian, English, or both—are distributed widely in Russia and abroad.
