Projects

The World Movement for Democracy confronts challenges to democracy by connecting activists, researchers and other advocates through online technology and regular, face-to-face meetings. To supplement this networking function, the World Movement also sponsors special projects to keep participants informed and to deepen understanding of democracy promotion.

Defending Civil Society

Civil society groups around the world face increasing restrictions from authoritarian governments, yet these groups are essential for the healthy growth of democracy and freedom. Defending Civil Society is the World Movement’s response to this troubling trend: an ongoing effort to develop strategies and build solidarity among activists and groups pushing back against laws repressing nongovernmental organizations. Defending Civil Society is a joint project with the International Center for Not-for-profit Law (ICNL). MORE

Democracy Assistance

The World Movement’s Democracy Assistance project is designed to highlight perceptions of the current strengths and weaknesses of international democracy assistance by recipients and other key players in the field, and to develop ideas for making the funding more effective. The project is being undertaken by the World Movement with contributions from the Madrid-based think tank, FRIDE. MORE
