What's Being Done On…
From 2002 to 2010, roughly four times a year, the World Movement would cast a spotlight on a theme within the pro-democracy field. World Movement staff members announced the themes in DemocracyNews, and then with help of World Movement participants compiled profiles of democracy groups, links to relevant resources, and original reporting.

The Protection of Journalists?
This installment focuses on methods to protect journalists. Many governments do little to look after independent journalists’ safety, and others often restrict freedom of expression and impose severe censorship to silence independent voices. To overcome such challenges, many journalists organize unions to protect themselves, promote press freedom, and mobilize solidarity in their region and globally. A number of watch groups also seek to offer protection for journalists at risk by publishing information about the injustices waged against journalists, such as murder, assault, or intimidation. These publications are used to further advocacy and solidarity building. more

The Role of Information and Communication Technologies in Democracy Promotion?
Information and communication technologies (ICTs) are increasingly being used in democracy work to strengthen solidarity, increase communication among organizations and activists, and share information more quickly. In particular, the introduction of ICTs in developing countries, especially throughout Africa, has sparked growth in the use of Short Message Service (SMS) technology on mobile phones and the use of the Internet by individuals in rural communities. Projects launched by Google and Fahamu have provided Internet and mobile phone use in remote areas of Africa, enabling towns to become more informed about events that affect them. more

Enhancing the Political Participation of Minority Peoples?
The recognition of minority rights is essential for establishing and maintaining a fully just, democratic, and peaceful society. A government must account for the rights of all groups, not just the dominant majority, and this inclusion of minority groups enhances the likelihood of democratic development. This installment highlights civil society organizations working to address the rights and needs of minority groups who are politically underrepresented in many societies, and emphasizes the importance of increasing participation of such groups in politics. more
