What's Being Done On . . . Increasing Women's Participation in Politics ?
International Human Rights Law Group / Sisters Arabic Forum - Yemen www.hrlawgroup.org/country_programs/yemen/default.asp The International Human Rights Law Group and the Sisters Arabic Forum (SAF) collaborate on a campaign for the rights of women in prisons, and a training that encouraged the very few women practicing lawyers and female law students to seek assistance to develop a women's lawyers association. The Law Group and the SAF organize a four-day workshop for women lawyers and law students on human rights principles and legal instruments. In addition, the Law Group is hosting six lectures to be given by pioneer women lawyers highlighting women's human rights and discussing gaps between international standards and Yemeni laws. Jerusalem Center for Women - Israel www.j-c-w.org The Jerusalem Center for Women (JCW) works to advance Palestinian women's rights and the status and involvement of women within Palestinian society. JCW is also committed to the protection of human rights and the realization of a Middle East peace. The JCW provides ten-month trainings for 100 Palestinian women in Jerusalem on advocacy, human rights, and democracy to prepare themselves for a more active role - politically, culturally and socially - within Palestinian society. In addition, the Center works to raise awareness among Palestinian women of their rights and responsibilities, and encourage their participation in community leadership. Kharkiv Center for Women's Studies - Ukraine Contact: rudneva@women.kharkov.ua The Kharkiv Center for Women's Studies (KCWS) provides training and consultancy programs on human rights issues. It works to raise awareness of women's issues by distributing information to print media and producing television programs. The KCWS focuses on disseminating strategies to overcome barriers to women's advancement, advocating women's interests at all levels of government, and encouraging new social attitudes. Promotion et Appui Aux Initiatives Feminines - Democratic Republic of the Congo Contact: tshimpambu@yahoo.fr Promotion et Appui Aux Initiatives Feminines (PAIF) is a non-profit, voluntary organization active in promoting the participation of women in development and politics. Over the last year, PAIF conducted a comprehensive program of human rights education, documentation, and advocacy. Specifically, PAIF conducted three human rights training sessions for women in Butembo, Goma, and Bukavu. The two-day training workshops followed up earlier workshops and focused on the role and rights of women, and strategies to enhance justice during a period of transition. Approximately 25 women participated in each workshop. In the city of Goman, PAIF also sponsors a monthly roundtable discussion highlighting human rights issues facing women in the region. The meetings provide a platform for advocacy, networking and information, and served to bring together leading women and men from civil society. Synergie pour la Paix - Democratic Republic of the Congo Contact: sypardc@hotmail.com Synergie pour la Paix (SYPA) is a network of 18 NGOs based in Oriental Province, dedicated to reinforcing efforts toward peace and reconciliation. It conducts a civic education program aimed at women that it will implement in conjunction with three women's groups, which are Mamans Wima, Promotion de la femme par les medias (PROFEM), and Solidarite des Filles-meres (SODIFES). The education programs focus on family rights, human rights, conflict resolution, and democracy. Monthly meetings with each group culminate in three training sessions focusing on democracy and governance topics, human rights issues, and health rights. Each workshop brings together representatives from each of the three groups as a platform to encourage women to play an active role in civic life. Women's Federation "Status" - Kazakhstan Contact: status@mail.kz The Women's Federation "Status", based in eastern Kazakhstan, develops informational, educational, and leadership programs for women. Its current project focuses on seeking transparency and fairness in domestic violence cases. Project activities include monitoring and compiling a database concerning the disposition of domestic violence cases, and conducting round tables and workshops to discuss law enforcement and judicial organs.
