VOTER EDUCATION

Nagaad Umbrella Organization - Somalia
Contact: Nagaad@bgtinet.com
As a coalition of many women's NGOs in Somaliland, Nagaad has organized and conducted a series of training workshops to enable women to develop the skills required to participate in public affairs. During a three-day training workshop for forty women on Political Participation and Advocacy, Nagaad facilitated the participants' formation of an action committee to develop and advocate for the adoption of a women's agenda by Somaliland Parliament. In addition, it supported a two-day meeting to train women interested in standing for the 2002 local elections and develop strategies for the women's community to assist them. Nagaad has recently planned to organize more workshops, including one that will specifically push for the addition of more women in decision-making institutions. It will also arrange a networking conference for female politicians around the issue of how to mobilize women to participate in politics through running for office and voting.
