Arab Program for Human Rights Activists - Middle East and North Africa Regional

Arab Program for Human Rights Activists (APHRA) emerged in 1997 to meet the need for solidarity among human rights activists in the Middle East. It has since run more than sixty public campaigns in support of citizens and activists who have been harassed in countries such as Egypt, Syria, Libya, Tunisia, Mauritania, Bahrain, Yemen, Sudan and Algeria. It has a network of more than 100 human rights activists in the region. APHRA disseminates information about human rights violations in the Middle East region through press releases and e-mail news alerts, and it calls for actions to defend human rights.

Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) - Asia Regional

The Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC), founded in 1986 by a prominent group of jurists and human rights activists in Asia, seeks to promote greater awareness and realization of human rights in the Asian region, and to mobilize Asian and international public opinion to obtain relief and redress for the victims of human rights violations. AHRC promotes civil and political rights, as well as economic, social and cultural rights. It operates its e-mail program, using an E-Mailing List, fax, and regular mailing, for human rights urgent appeals on a daily basis. It is also linked to a wider e-mail network, Asia Human Rights Alert (Asia-HR-Alert) Mailing List, which is an extensive e-mailing list for human rights within Asia and Pacific, linking thousands of persons.

Cuban Institute of Independent Economists - Cuba

The Cuban Institute of Independent Economists recently launched its Web site, which is designed to show the opposing independent viewpoints of life in the Communist state. The site contain news from roughly 130 dissident groups, as well as monthly reports on various issues, such as the economy in Cuba. The site also contain opinion pieces and photos as well as contact information for sixty independent libraries and over twenty alternative news sources.

Digital Freedom Network - Global

The Digital Freedom Network (DFN) develops and promotes the use of Internet technology for human rights activism around the world. DFN increases awareness of human rights issues on the Internet, makes technical information more readily available to activists, and provides an online voice to those not otherwise free to express themselves. Recent accomplishments include a series of online chats with prominent activists and experts. DFN gives technical assistance to activists by developing Net-based campaigns free of charge and creating technology tutorials. It also publishes original news articles about human rights issues as well as articles provided by other organizations. The guiding belief is that all people have the right to express themselves freely as long as they do not infringe on the rights of others.

Egyptian Organization for Human Rights - Egypt

Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) aims to support and defend human rights in Egypt, and it is guided by the principles established in Universal Declaration of Human Rights and all other international human rights instruments. EOHR monitors the state of human rights in Egypt, provides legal and moral support to the victims of human rights violations, and provides human rights education. EOHR uses e-mails and the Internet for issuing press releases, statements, and appeals, and conducts campaigns around specific areas of pervasive human rights problems in Egypt.

Human Rights Center for the Assistance of Prisoners (HRCAP) - Egypt

The Human Rights Center for the Assistance of Prisoners (HRCAP), based in Cairo, aims to provide legal assistance to prisoners and to advocates reform of the Egyptian penal system to bring them into conformity with international laws and conventions signed by Egypt, including the standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, the Convention Against Torture, and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Over the past four years, HRCAP has implemented an extensive program to monitor and gather information on Egyptian prisons, compiled research and publicized its findings and recommendations. It uses e-mails and its Web site to dessminate press releases and program reports.

Information Center for the Human Rights Movement - Russia

The Information Center's aim is to publicize the goals and activities of the human rights movement by continuing a campaign of press releases, press conferences, and press monitoring. The Center works to connect the media with the human rights community by maintaining regular contact with human rights organizations and some government officials in Moscow, the Russian provinces, and overseas. These contacts supply the Center with information on developments relating to human rights issues, including human rights violations, important court cases, legislation and other government activities. The Center's staff distributes this information to a wide range of media contacts through frequent press releases, press conferences and round-table discussions. The Center also produces a daily summary of articles appearing in the national press and distributes it by e-mail to 1,500 human rights and related organizations in Russia and abroad.

Proyecto Varela - Cuba

In May 2001, Cuban democracy activists delivered to their National Assembly 11,020 signatures calling for open elections, freedom of speech, freedom for political prisoners and free enterprise. Known as the Proyecto Varela, the effort draws upon a provision in the Cuban constitution that enables citizens to introduce legislative initiatives when accompanied by 10,000 signatures. Proyecto, working with the National Democratic Institute for International Affiars (NDI), seeks to build international support for the effort. As a tool for the international campaign, it created a Web site to provide information about the activities of its supporters, and developments within the island. Proyecto hopes to host, on the Web site, more than 20,000 signatures to the petition to afford the signatories additional protection.

Syrian Human Rights Committee - Syria

The Syrian Human Rights Committee is an independent human rights organization concerned fundamentally with defending general liberties and human rights of the Syrian people through several practices, such as reporting human rights violations, conducting research, publishing books on human rights in Syria, and raising awareness and promoting the culture of human rights in the Syrian society. SHRC publishes a quarterly journal, Justice, which is available online. SHRC also disseminate reports and information about human rights violations in Syria by e-mail. SHRC's Web site features a Web-based discussion forum among its members on various issues.

Women's Human Rights Net (whrNET) - Global

This organization is a collaborative Information & Communication Technology (ICT) project developed by an international coalition of women's organizations. whrNET aims to strengthen advocacy for women's human rights through the effective utilization of information and communication technologies. It provides news, information about conferences, job and internship opportunities, and other useful resources.
