African Radio Drama Association (ARDA) - Nigeria

The African Radio Drama Association (ARDA) Nigeria broadcasts two radio serial dramas on democracy and good governance on several radio stations throughout the country. "Rainbow City" is a Pidgin English soap opera about life in a big city and about people struggling daily to survive but also understanding the new social and political dispensation of democracy. It weaves concepts of scrutiny, transparency, leadership, civic rights and responsibility, patriotism and respect for the rule of law into intrigue, suspense and drama. The second radio soap "Asuba ta Gari" or "New Dawn" is in the Hausa language. This serial uses "infotainment" and "edu-tainment" concepts to address issues of women's human rights under Muslim laws, in addition to problems of corruption and accountability in a democratic society.
Alternativna Televizija (ATV) - Bosnia-Hercegovina

ATV broadcasts news, information and music dedicated to upholding the ideal of Bosnia as a tolerant and multicultural society. It produces investigative documentaries that address local community concerns in the Serb Republic. Topics include the situation of refugees and returnees in the region, prison conditions, the treatment of ethnic and religious minorities, the process of privatization, cases of corruption and drug smuggling, criminal syndicates and their connection to nationalist political parties, as well as issues dealing with the need for judicial and local administrative reform. This project encourages citizens to take an active role in holding elected representatives accountable for their actions and promotes the transparency and accountability of governmental institutions in the Serb Republic.
Democracy Radio - IDASA - South Africa

Democracy Radio is a community-oriented production and training project based in Cape Town. The project aims to promote democracy, give relevant information to communities, and provide government with an opportunity to interact directly with citizens and their concerns through partnerships with community radio stations in South Africa. Democracy Radio posts a weekly 15-minute program to community radio stations across the country. Programming includes issues of national policy, reconciliation, reparations, racism, health issues such as HIV/AIDS, clean water and land restitution. To support stations in producing local content, Democracy Radio has a program of ongoing training and mentoring. At present the programs are sent out on cassette and CD at the request of the stations. Partner stations produce local content of their own to supplement these national programs, and they encourage community participation in broadcasts through phone-in discussion.
Development Broadcasting Unit - Malawi

The Development Broadcasting Unit seeks to establish a sustainable framework for a broadcast dialogue about civil rights and citizenship in Malawi. The project has established a network of Radio Listening Clubs that are supported through training and mobilization activities to generate content for a radio series called "Kanthu N'Khama". The structures provide the corporation with a sustainable resource through which community-generated programs will be produced. This encourages a participatory, needs-based approach to communication and it supports democratic development through creating effective dialogue between civil society, the media and politicians.

In order to increase citizen participation in good governance issues facing the country, Medias pour la Paix, a Kinshasa-based organization, conducts media education programs on radio, television, and newspapers. The campaign produces 26 bi-weekly radio and six bi-monthly television programs aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of ethnic conflict. Medias pour la Paix also runs 16 advertising spots on radio, 16 on television, 40 in newspaper, and four theater performances aimed primarily at the 6 million residents of Kinshasa.
"Radio Bo" Kiss 104 FM - Sierra Leone

Radio Bo is one of the only independent radio stations to operate throughout the civil war in Sierra Leone. Due to its nonpartisan stance, its programs are able both to hold credibility among combatants and to provide critical information about the peace process to citizens victimized by the rebels. Radio Bo trains community-based singers, cultural groups and opinion leaders in the art of broadcasting and supports them as Community Animators for the radio. It develops programs on peace, development and the democratic process. Radio Bo also broadcasts songs and radio dramas, as well as media campaign jingles and radio panel discussions on peace, democracy and development.
Rural Human Rights Activists Programme - Liberia

The Rural Human Rights Activists Programme (RHRAP) aims to raise grassroots awareness about the danger of religious intolerance and ethnic conflict, to prevent further escalation of conflict, and to promote the environment for national reconciliation. RHRAP conducts workshops and roundtable discussions throughout the country. Participants, including community leaders, religious leaders, teachers, students, refugees, and governmental officials, discuss human rights fundamentals and principles, strategies for conflict resolution, and techniques for ethnic coexistence. In order to reach a broader audience and reinforce those programs, RHRAP produces a twice-weekly radio program, in which prominent Liberians and human rights activists discuss reconciliation, peace-building, and human rights. The program is aired in English and 16 local dialects.
Studio Ijambo - Burundi

In operation since 1995, Studio Ijambo is an independent radio production studio in Burundi that produces radio programs to promote dialogue, peace, and reconciliation. Its slogan is "Dialogue for the Future", which reflects its emphasis on highlighting areas of common ground, rather than sources of divisiveness, among Burundians. Programs focus on current events and processes related to Burundi's transitional period. Messages about social and political change are integrated into the development of characters and story lines. The Studio's Web site offers five weekly programs in streaming audio. The programs are added to the Web site soon after their on-air broadcast.
