Its mandate is found in the OAS Charter and the American Convention on Human Rights. The IACHR represents all of the member States of the OAS. It has seven members who act independently, without representing any particular country. It is charged with ensuring the promotion and protection of Human and Peoples' Rights throughout the African continent. The Commission has its headquarters in Banjul, the Gambia and is composed 11 members elected by secret ballot by the Assembly of Heads of State and Government for 6 year renewable terms. http://www.achpr.org/ European Court on Human Rights http://www.echr.coe.int European Commissioner for Human Rights is responsible for promoting education, awareness and respect for human rights in member states and ensuring full and effective compliance with Council of Europe texts. The Commissioner, who is elected by the Parliamentary Assembly, plays a supporting and essentially preventive role, without legal powers.
