What's Being Done On . . . Peace Building and Democracy ?
Chang Fo-Chuan Center for Study of Human Rights-Taiwan Contact: mab@mail.scu.edu.tw The Chang Fo-Chuan Center for Study of Human Rights-Taiwan brings together academics, researchers, and human rights practitioners to study the relationship between peace studies and human rights through workshops and conferences. Two conferences on "Promoting Peace Studies in Taiwan" were held within the last two years, and brought together representatives of policy and research think tanks, NGO activists, and the academic community. The center also conducts workshops on human rights, peace, and development. Council for the Defense of Human Rights and Freedom - Kosovo www.cdhrf.org/English/index_english.htm The Council for the Defense of Human Rights and Freedom monitors various aspects of human rights in Kosovo. The Council has worked since its founding in 1989 to promote domestic compliance with international human rights standards. It has focused on the rights of minorities in the province. The information gathered has been used by international organizations, including the U.N. Commission on Human Rights. The Council publishes electronic bulletins and organizes lectures and workshops on human rights through its network of branch offices throughout Kosovo. Groupe d' Appui Conseils aux Realisations pour le Developpment Endogene (Council Supporting Group for Endogene Development Achievement)- Democractic Republic of Congo Contact: dia_glol@antenna.nl Groupe d' Appui Conseils aux Realisations pour le Development Endogene (GRACE) works with youth in North Kivu (Democratic Republic of Congo), an isolated region devastated by the conflict, and where child soldiers are recruited. GRACE organizes training sessions that bring together teenagers from each area of the region to discuss how to protect and promote human rights in periods of conflict. The participants gain basic knowledge and skills and break the isolation of the inhabitants by establishing links with more experienced human rights activists. GRACE also encourages the creation of human rights committees by local participants that may follow up training and coordinate peace-building efforts. Groupe Justice et Liberation (Justice and Liberation Group) - Democratic Republic of the Congo Contact: gilrdc@hotmail.com The Groupe Justice et Liberation works to solve the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo by promoting education on human rights. The organization is working on several projects that introduce basic human rights issues to young people. One such program is conducted in primary and secondary schools through a series of bi-weekly seminars. This work is in conjunction with a program to mobilize future human rights activists within the 18-24 years age group. The seminar programs are supported by several day-long training sessions for justice practitioners and a regular newsletter to alert people to urgent democracy and human rights issues. International Center for Ethnic Studies- Sri Lanka www.icescolombo.org/home.htm Contact: ices@slt.lk The International Center for Ethnic Studies is working with the Canadian Human Rights Foundation to design and implement a human rights training program that focuses on the protection and promotion of minority rights. The International Center for Ethnic Studies provides a platform for researching inter-ethnic conflict, stimulating cross-national cooperation, and brings together scholars from around the world. Les Amis de Nelson Mandela (Friends of Nelson Mandela)- Democratic Republic of Congo Contact: anmdhkisangani@hotmail.com or anmdhkinshasa@raga.net Through its human rights advocacy and education programs Les Amis de Nelson Mandela aims to create a culture of peace and respect for human rights. Its recent programs are targeted at women and members of human rights network in Kisangani, Mbuji Mayi, and Kinshasa, and include three-day training sessions that bring together network members to assess their work for the past ten years, training on human rights investigative techniques, and developing effective communication strategies for human rights groups. LANM aims to increase women's participation in human rights activities by recruiting women and providing them with training and support for their activities. Tuzla Human Rights Office- Bosnia- Herzegovina Contact Branka Rajner at: biroy@bih.net.ba The Tuzla Human Rights Office works with its partner organization, the Bijeljina Human Rights Office, to record human rights violations throughout Bosnia. The Tuzla office is headquartered in the Croat part of the country, while the Bijeljina is located in the Serb Republic. The two offices are places where citizens and members of the international community can report human rights violations, gather appropriate information on human rights cases, assess international standards for human rights, and promote participatory democracy. The two offices help to guarantee the protection of human rights, peace, and stability. About "What's Being Done On . . .
