Contact: Jeff Fischer, jeff@ifes.org
The International Foundation for Election Systems (IFES)' Money & Politics Program is a global initiative to promote transparency, accountability, and enforcement in political finance worldwide. With a focus on disclosure, IFES identifies and targets the needs of each country separately and works together with local partners to apply internationally accepted standards and best practices. Recognizing that complete, detailed, and public disclosure is the cornerstone of any successful political finance system, IFES addresses the unique needs of each country with technical assistance to promote open disclosure through transparency provisions in legislation and procedures, public information software and materials, and training and education. IFES works directly with political parties, candidates, governmental officials, judges, the media, NGOs, and academics to help them better understand and use the available information in their campaigns, journalistic investigations, oversight functions, research and choices at the polls. Encouraging these groups to work together to share information and bring the important issues of political finance to the forefront of the political debate, IFES promotes further reform in the development, application, and enforcement of legislation. IFES also helps develop the Money & Politics Database, which is an instrument for promoting complete, detailed, and public disclosure of financial information. An example of the database can be found on the Web site of the Central Election Commission of Lithuania (www.vrk.lt/pip/pip_e.htm).
